All of the functions would be carried out in computer-generated environments with physically realistic effects. The developers hope to achieve results that would allow the tests to be as close to physically real traffic as possible.

Optical and radar-based sensor systems are both required to capture the environment for this purpose more accurately than an experienced human driver.

Algorithms would determine control strategies in a fraction of a second with the help of data captured through the numerous systems installed and networked in the car itself. These may include cameras, lidars, radars, and ultrasonic systems.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are demonstrably reducing the risk of road accidents. Every additional ADAS system allows automotive developers to come one step closer to the vision of accident-free driving.

However, the journey to Zero Road-Accident Risk is as difficult as one might imagine. Numerous other tests are yet to be conducted to attain the level of desirable safety standards. Scientists at the RAND Corporation, one of the largest think tanks in the U.S explained that extensive testing and research are required for autonomous driving. For example, to reduce the fatal risk of a road accident about 11 billion miles would be needed.

These manifested timeframes and costs are currently incompatible with product development. PEVATeC revealed that it is working to create virtual worlds to encompass all relevant situations on the road. Thus, the test cases for algorithms and sensors can be used in future driver assistance systems.
