City Council discusses latest developments to bring Waymo to New Orleans

New Orleans is testing Waymo self-driving cars to map potholes as city leaders discuss the possibility of introducing them permanently.

While 12 Waymo cars are currently being tested with drivers inside, not everyone is convinced about their effectiveness.

“I don’t think it’s going to solve anything. What’s the point of it?” said Carmel Monju, who cited safety concerns as a reason for opposition.

Others are more enthusiastic about the idea.

“I feel like it’ll be cool. The future is coming, so might as well just get ready for it,” said Dae’Shawn Moses, of New Orleans.

Waymo tests without a driver are not expected to hit the streets until later this year, and for-hire Waymo services are not anticipated until at least 2027.

Officials have emphasized that safety is their top priority.

“We recognize the challenges in our city; we’re looking to see what is happening in other cities before we move forward,” said Councilmember Eugene Green. “We’re talking a loose timeline of 2027.”

Legislation is operating on a four-quarter process before for-hire cars can be introduced, and the city is currently in quarter two, which involves ongoing discussions with industry stakeholders and a Transportation Committee discussion.

The Department of Transportation told WDSU that Waymo must obtain a permit/certificate to operate as a transportation network company, and as of Wednesday, Waymo has not requested one.
