Germany allows driverless vehicles on public roads

Germany has passed a bill that will allow driverless vehicles on public roads by 2022. Today, testing self-driving vehicles is already allowed in Germany but the new law will also make it possible for driverless vehicles to enter public roads without a human safety driver.

Under the terms of the new law, vehicles with Level 4 autonomy will be allowed – this means the computer handles all the driving in certain environments or conditions. In Germany, these vehicles will be limited to certain geographical areas.

Argo AI is one example of a company that will open a test site in partnership with Volkswagen to test VW ID.Buzz electric vans (pictured).

Germany is the next country to allow self-driving vehicles on public roads, following several US states and China.
