Chris Urmson, the brilliant engineer famous for his pioneering work on the technology behind self-driving, helps us understand how a driverless car functions.

The way it sees the road is critical to it being a safe technology. The cameras are taught to detect moving objects, white lines on the road, traffic signals, people, zebra crossings and more, while the technology works hard to compute data in real time, to know which direction cars and people are moving in, as well as the speed.

Chris previously worked with Alphabet on their self-driving car project and is currently the CEO of the start-up company Aurora Innovation. Watch his simplify the workings of a driverless car.
