Bosch & CARIAD Complete Mass Market Level 2 Driving System

Bosch and CARIAD have announced the completion of a joint development of assisted and automated driving functions within the Automated Driving Alliance.

Together, both project partners have created an artificial intelligence-based software stack that can be incorporated into various vehicle classes, from small cars to premium models, as well as into both electric and combustion engine platforms.

The solution will be available to both project partners for use in series production projects and for their respective further development – such as the VW ID.EVERY1, which will feature technology developed within the Automated Driving Alliance and go into production in 2027.

As project partners for automated driving, both Bosch and CARIAD have laid a foundation to bring ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) driving functions to the wider mass market, with Level 2 driving functions aiming to provide comprehensive support to drivers and, at their highest level, allow for hands-free driving in a number of traffic situations.

The system was tested with development vehicles across Europe, Japan and North America, and was trained based on this data, which was in turn collected by a dedicated fleet of data collection vehicles.

Additionally, project partners also equipped vehicle fleets from logistics providers, leasing companies, and service vehicles that are in daily use worldwide. These fleets ensure a data foundation for the training of algorithms and, in extreme situations, record events in order to train and validate the system for these more demanding conditions.

Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group, said:

Advanced driver assistance systems are becoming increasingly important for our customers. They make driving safer, more comfortable, and easier. That’s why the Volkswagen Group remains committed to bringing highly automated driving to Europe and North America and is consistently aligning its strategy toward that goal.

CARIAD and Bosch have jointly created a strong technological foundation for this within the Automated Driving Alliance. We are now building on this – with a clear focus on speed, scalability, and rapid implementation for our brands and customers.

With the conclusion of the development partnership, both project partners have full access to a broad portfolio of shared intellectual property and data created within the framework of the Automated Driving Alliance. Both companies will aim to incorporate the jointly achieved results into their respective series production products, and will continue working on the future development of created solutions.
