Torc backs Virginia workforce training effort for autonomous vehicles

Autonomous trucking developer Torc is supporting a new workforce training initiative in Virginia aimed at preparing workers for jobs in the emerging autonomous vehicle sector.

The program is funded through the state’s GO Virginia economic development initiative and is designed to align workforce training across the Commonwealth to support the growth of automated vehicle technologies. The effort will bring together industry partners, educational institutions and workforce organizations to develop training programs and credentials related to autonomous vehicle systems and advanced transportation technologies.

Torc, a subsidiary of Daimler Truck that develops autonomous driving technology for heavy-duty trucks, said the initiative will help ensure the workforce is prepared for the skills needed as self-driving transportation technologies move toward commercialization. The company has been advancing autonomous truck development and is targeting commercial deployment later this decade.

The program will focus on building consistent training pathways and expanding access to technical education related to automation, advanced manufacturing and transportation technologies. Similar GO Virginia programs have previously funded collaborations between industry and educational partners to strengthen talent pipelines in emerging transportation sectors.

Virginia officials say the initiative reflects a broader effort to prepare the state’s workforce for rapidly evolving technologies while supporting economic growth in industries such as autonomous vehicles, logistics and advanced manufacturing.
