Waymo’s autonomous fleet of robotaxis has reached 2,000 vehicles

Summary: Waymo now operates over 2,000 robotaxis across five U.S. cities, including its new deployment in Atlanta, performing over 250,000 rides weekly. Meanwhile, Tesla recently launched its robotaxis in Austin and continues to invest in AI with a $500 million supercomputing initiative, despite canceling its Dojo project. Innovations in electric vehicle (EV) technology, like General Motors’ new charging adapters compatible with multiple chargers, are enhancing the robotaxi ecosystem. This development aims to ease EV charging, although it may complicate the number of adapters needed. The autonomous mobility landscape is evolving rapidly with these advancements.

Waymo, the American autonomous driving company, is now operating over 2,000 robotaxis across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, securing its spot as a global behemoth in autonomous taxi operations.

Waymo has been rolling out its driverless vehicles across the states, recently deploying taxis in Atlanta, its 5th city. The company is successfully expanding its operations as the CPO of Waymo, Saswat Panigrahi, told Forbes as of April 2025, that over 250,000 rides are performed each week.

As robotaxis are becoming more popular, Tesla, the American automotive manufacturer, has also launched their robotaxis this June in Austin, Texas, and are making more strides towards the widespread adoption of autonomous mobility. The company launched a project called Dojo in 2021, dedicated to creating a supercomputer for training artificial intelligence in its driverless cars, but the project was announced to be cancelled in August 2025.

Regardless of the project’s shutdown, Tesla is still pushing full steam ahead by  spending $500 million on supercomputing infrastructure in its facility in New York. The company has already spent $314 million of that fund last year on this facility, handling computer set up, and investing in hardware and infrastructure for AI training.

More innovations for EV drivers

As the robotaxi ecosystem continues to evolve and adapt, new EV innovations in the automotive industry indirectly benefit robotaxis, opening more minds to the concept of driverless mobility. General Motors has recently announced a new innovation for EV drivers, launching  three new charging adapters, alongside the Tesla Supercharger, expanding the options for its electric vehicles to plug into multiple chargers. This will allow for more simplicity and options when charging an EV, but can also create some complications adding in more adapters to juggle.
