Yandex expanding self-driving fleet to 1,000

The Russian Google-competitor Yandex plans to increase its fleet of self-driving vehicles to more than 1,000, a spokesperson for the company told Reuters.

Yandex only started testing autonomous cars on public roads earlier this year. According to the spokesperson, it will take between 18 and 24 months to produce an additional 1,000 self-driving cars.

According to research published by HSBC bank at the start of 2019, Yandex’s autonomous driving software is on a par with global leaders. It was also reported to be catching up with Google’s Waymo.

Yandex has also obtained a licence to perform driverless testing in Israel.
