Zoox, the autonomous vehicle startup acquired by Amazon in 2020, has revealed a production-ready version of its custom robotaxi. While the update maintains the distinctive, boxy profile first introduced in 2020, it integrates a series of functional enhancements designed to improve passenger comfort, visibility, and real-world interaction.
Because the robotaxi features a fully symmetrical, bidirectional form factor, distinguishing the front of the vehicle from the rear can be challenging for pedestrians and other drivers. To address this, Zoox has relocated its bidirectional reflectors for maximum visibility and programmed them to rotate colours, signalling the vehicle’s direction of travel.
- Additionally, the exterior doors have been upgraded with hardware enhancements to streamline communication:
- Two-Way Audio: The integrated door speaker and microphone now feature full two-way audio capabilities.
- Real-World Interaction: This system allows passengers to communicate with individuals outside the vehicle, while giving first responders a direct line of contact to Zoox support personnel.
Inside, the cabin retains its unique “carriage-style” layout, where four passengers sit facing one another, but introduces a refreshed aesthetic and ergonomic upgrades based on early rider feedback.
The interior features a lighter, more modern colour palette consisting of monochrome aloe green seating paired with stone-grey flooring. For a more comfortable ride, Zoox added extra padding and ergonomic contouring to both the bench seats and headrests. The cabin’s interface technology has also been improved with a more vivid, high-contrast touchscreen display, rounded out by the installation of larger, more practical cupholders.
The announcement follows the official commercial launch of Zoox’s autonomous robotaxi service on the Las Vegas Strip in September 2025.
The updated vehicles will be manufactured at the company’s dedicated production facility in Hayward, California, and will gradually deploy into active fleets later this year. While Zoox declined to provide a specific initial production target, the company confirmed that the Hayward facility has the capacity to scale up to 100 vehicles per week. This manufacturing capability is designed to aggressively support Zoox’s broader expansion plans throughout 2026, subject to ongoing regulatory approvals.
