In-cabin sensors are instrumental in helping to overcome the tragedy of hot-car deaths, in which children perish because they are forgotten in vehicles by parents or caregivers, or get locked inside a parked vehicle. In 2019, there were 53 hot-car deaths in the US alone, with thousands of children being rescued from locked vehicles in distressed conditions. These tragedies are all preventable, by means of radar technology that is reliable and available.

By detecting dimension, shape, location, breathing pattern and movement of people, high-resolution imaging radar can identify infants even when asleep, covered by a blanket, hidden in a car seat or in the foot well. It is robust in all environmental conditions, regardless of line-of-sight, bad lighting or harsh weather conditions. A millimeter wave radar with a large antenna array can cover two seating rows with a single RFIC, on a single PCB. When used as an in-cabin sensing solution, it detects passengers in each seat of the car, differentiating between adults and children.

Once the sensor identifies that a child is the sole occupant of a vehicle, the driver can be immediately alerted. Other functions such as two-row seat belt reminders (with 3-passenger rear bench distinction), intruder alerts and airbag enabling/disabling can also be deployed with the same sensor for a holistic in-cabin safety solution.
