The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China authorized a license for a modern factory in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, where Geely is headquartered, to start production in February.
In March of last year, Geely revealed proposals for the $326 million Taizhou venture, with production expected to start in October. As per a media release, the plant would be capable of developing over 500 satellites each year. Vehicle-to-X (V2X) and Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications will be provided by the satellite constellation to allow fully autonomous self-driving.
Geely hasn’t disclosed the exact number of satellites it expects to fly, but the manufacturing potential suggests thousands. According to Geely, the constellation would not need expensive base stations to achieve self-driving. During the first half of this year, Geely plans to deploy two model satellites to test navigational enhancement.
