Intel’s Mobileye Announces Plan for Driverless Delivery Service, Tests Self-driving Cars in NYC

A developer of autonomous vehicle technology is testing self-driving cars in the U.S.’s largest city.

Chip giant Intel announced that its Mobileye subsidiary successfully deployed autonomous cars in “one of the world’s most challenging driving environments.” Video footage released by the company showed the system navigating streets filled with pedestrians, bicyclists, unpredictable drivers, tunnels, and other obstacles.

“Driving in complex urban areas such as New York City is a crucial step in vetting the capabilities of an autonomous system and moving the industry closer to commercial readiness,” Mobileye President and CEO Amnon Shashua said in a statement.

Mobileye said its New York vehicles are operating using a cameras-only system. The company added that it incorporates lidar and radar technology into its computer-vision subsystem in an approach it calls “True Redundancy.”

The company reportedly plans to add more cars to its New York City test fleet later this year.

Officials said Mobileye is the only company currently holding an autonomous vehicle testing permit in New York, although Reuters noted that General Motors’ Cruise division received a permit for tests in 2017 that were later abandoned. Mobileye is already testing self-driving cars in Detroit as well as in China, Japan, Germany, and its native Israel.

The company hopes to launch a driverless delivery service in 2023.
