Land Rover’s self-driving car to hit streets next year

Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled its new autonomous vehicle, dubbed Project Vector.

The car, which is a four meters long pod, is designed to autonomously transport people or goods around cities.

The car is part of the brand’s Destination Zero mission, which aims to “make societies safer and healthier, and the environment cleaner” by “achieving a future of zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion – though its products, services and across its facilities”.

Project Vector is all about showcasing what the future of emission-free urban transportation would look like (which is apparently, a small box-like car).

According to Jag, the four-meter pod-like vehicle is fully connected to the internet via 5G and ‘autonomy-ready’ – two factors that allow it to be integrated into future transportation systems.

The general idea is that these pods will sit around until you need them, and once onboard will take you wherever you need to go – or as they call it “travel on demand and autonomously”.

There is an open cabin space and configurable seating, which means Project Vector could serve various purposes.

Jaguar plans to test the project further next year in Coventry, where a few of these Vectors will be tested.
