The first driverless car hits European roads

Every day, the dream of the fully autonomous car is becoming more and more a reality and, thanks to the German start-up Vay, a new stage in this ambitious project has just been reached. The latter has indeed driven the very first driverless car in Europe. But beware, this does not mean that no one is driving.

There is no denying that our German neighbors are definitely at the forefront of technology in terms of autonomous driving. While Mercedes is the first automaker to achieve Level 3 certification in Europe and the United States – well before Tesla, therefore – the country has also seen a start-up emerge that may well revolutionize the use we have of the car.

Baptized Vay, this one has even just taken a new step in Europe: it is she who has just rolled the very first driverless car behind the wheel on a public road. What to announce the imminent arrival of completely autonomous cars on the old continent? Not yet. Indeed, Vay prefers to focus on an alternative technology: remote control.

Vay wants to revolutionize driving with its new technology

You may have guessed it from its name, telecontrol consists of control a car remotelye. The operator’s workstation resembles a car in every way, in that they control it using a steering wheel, pedals and screens that display the route, in the same way as a setup simulation. The instructions are then sent by mobile data. In the event of a network fault, the car is also capable of park itself out of harm’s way.

The idea is therefore not to completely dispense with a driver, but rather to address customers who no longer wish to drive. Indeed, Vay plans to use its technology in two ways. The first, to create a classic taxi service, except that the car will be empty apart from the customer. The second, for deliver rental cars directly to the desired address.
