Pony.ai is the first company in China approved to test “driver out” in the follow truck in a “1+N” platoon. Pony.ai has begun testing its robotruck convoy on the cross-provincial expressway connecting Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province. While the lead robotruck will continue to have a safety operator in the driver’s seat, the robotruck behind it is “driver out” – no one behind the wheel. This first permit for a company in China is a major milestone for Pony.ai’s leading robotruck business and will further reduce the costs of autonomous trucking. As of the end of December 2024, Pony.ai’s fleet of over 190 robotrucks have traveled more than 5 million kilometers (over 3.1 million miles) of road tests and have transported more than 860 million ton-kilometers of cargo.
